Workgroup vs Domain
Hello - This goes under the heading " glad to be doing this now instead of at work." I have been playing at home with a SBS 2008 and a Dell laptop 420 with Win XP Pro. I did a clean install on the laptop and do not remember making a "Workgroup" password. So I was tweaking the settings in system to join the domain on sbs 2008. I took it off domain and put it in workgroup and restarted. It booted up asking for a password. Of course none of the network domain passwords worked. I have XP on a disk . I went to set up to boot from harddrive but it does not see set up from the XP disk. Please help.
It's asking for the local administrator password. Type in Administrator or the username you created when you first installed xp. Then hit enter

Ok, I guess you did not read the info. When I did the install I did not or don't remember making a workgroup username and password.
There always is the local account 'administrator'
It may not show up on your login screen you will have to hit ctl-alt-del (x2) and you will get the old login box .. type in 'administrator' with no password and you should be good to go.

What is x2, I hit control alt del twice. that did not work. keep in mind the unit has been changed from domain to workgroup.

Remember unit is now under workgroup and asking for a password. I hit ctrl alt del twice.
you may have to use http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/ and reset the password. Don't forget to 'save' at the end of the routine or your changes will not be saved.

How do you use this if you cant log on to the computer?
because you boot from the iso that you have burnt to a cd/dvd
ASKER
So you have to download and burn then run it? I did read some of it . I might try it. But looking for something a little more elegant.
Thanx
Thanx
have you tried safe mode?
ASKER
Yes, but when you get to safe mode, it asks for a password !

The author never commented on results of trying ve3ofa's suggestion to use the program from pogostick. The only response was that there was a desire for something "more elegant". The suggestion will work and is not very difficult for someone trying to accomplish a task of this level.
Ve3ofa's comment about logging in as Administrator is likely to work, though not as certainly as the pogostick solution.
I would suggest giving all points to ve3ofa, possibly split between the two different suggestions.

I emailed that I do not want this service. No harm, no worries .
As I noted in your comment, I was aware of your wanting an "more elegant" solution. My point was that the original post was for help, ve3ofa gave such help, and deserves the points. The suggestions given take very little effort to accomplish and one will do the job.
Hmmm... as I argued, ve3ofa should have been given all points. Why did I get any?
