configure 2 backups with win server 2008 r2, one to internal one to usb

hi i hope you are well.

i have a win 2008 r2 server. it currently backs up very happily to a 1tb internal sata disk using the built in windows backup.

to add redundancy, i want to use an external usb 3 1tb disk which will be taken off site every night.

i cant seem to get the built in windows server backup to add another backup job.

help please!!

The built in backup does not work with 4k drives.

Any drive 2.2 tb or larger is probably a 4k drive.

The issue is the backup is stored as a vhd file and it does not support 4k drives or images larger that 2.2 tb.

You will need a 3rd party utility or move to server 2012 (they fixed it).

hi pgm,

its only a 1tb disk so it wont be that but thanks for the thought.

@takecoffe

one problem is that i want the backup to run to the usb disk at about 5pm, so they can unplug it and take it home when they finish work, the other backup doesnt run until about 9pm when they are out of the office - i really need 2 jobs....any thoughts??
aha that option is not available .. you need to think for other backup solution ...
any work arounds anyone?? cant believe i cant run a different back up job!!
Still could be a problem with the sector size (4k vs 512b).
A vhd file was written to use 512byte sector count.

A lot of the newer drives are 4k these days.

Use the fsutil to check.

Another problem is that discovering whether or not the drive you are about to buy has a 4K sector size is not easy. Once purchased, you can find out by attaching the drive. opening an administrative command prompt, and running:

fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo x:

where x is the drive letter of the target drive. This will show the sector size, and may even include the words “Not supported” in the output.
ok pgm, thanks for that but i havent even got that far yet, i cant even set up a different backup job let alone decide which disk to use
I have tried to schedule backup from command prompt but it overwritten old backup which was configured from console..

sorry.. i am blank no option available to configure 2 backups on different schedule time.
takecoffee...thanks for that. that was what i was worried about - i had read that you could set up a job via cli but didnt like the idea of it....no reporting either presumably...
Hello,
You can try using third party backup solution like Storage craft; it works on block level backup. If you are backing up your OS drive then at the time of system crash you can use the backup image and create a VM from it. Which reduce your downtime, as its compaction ration is 2:1. And once the first base backup is taken on the next day it takes incremental backup as per your scheduled.

The best feature is it purges the exchange and SQL logs when VSS backup is taken at the end of the day.

Note: - This backup is a chain system so if you want to restore your server from an incremental image. You should have all the images including base image.

I am using the same and it helps me many time to restore my machine.

guys thanks for this. im still trying to figure out what to do.

the problem is this -

i dont want to  run the backup during office hours. obviously, they want to take the external disk home when they leave the office. it runs at 9pm as it is.

they dont want to spend huge amounts of money on the external backup

the only thing i can think of is to have 2 external disks. they leave one attached to the server, and take one home. the next day, they plug in the one they took home and take home the one that was attached to the server.

this way they have an offsite  system image , albeit a day old. the data is also backed up to the cloud anyway, so in the event of a theft, we have a day old system image and then we can pull down the other data  from the cloud.

btw, i dont have exchange running so i dont need to worry about that.

any thoughts on this? can win server backup  to three locations like this?
ok, my solution is what they are going for.
