Windows 7 logon problem
Hi,
We've got quite a few windows 7 (x64) work stations, one of which is playing up... The user tried to logon using his domain credentials as normal but the Welcome screen just hangs (for hours if left)...
So I tried my administrator credentials and had the same outcome.
Then I started it up in Safe mode with networking and used my creds, that worked fine logged onto domain no problem, so i tried his creds and again no problem either...
So I looked in the event viewer to see if there was anything obvious, the only error that was repeated again and again was:
A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the ShellHWDetection service.
I assume this is why 'Normal' windows would not complete the logon process..? What does this refer to and how could it be fixed..?
All work stations have up to date Malware /Virus protection...
Thanks

Just out of interest, I've found a few more errors which may help in diagnosis:
The winlogon notification subscriber <GPClient> was unavailable to handle a notification event.
The winlogon notification subscriber <SessionEnv> was unavailable to handle a notification event.
The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error:
The dependency service or group failed to start.
Do they help..?

ok results so far:
tried different anti-malware on the pc, nothing found...
Ran sfc /scannow, no problems found...
Ran chkdsk c: /f - there were a few corrupt's which were fixed
Tried again, still the same, using Normal logon, no joy, just hangs...
So I went into the event log again whilst I was in Safe mode and noticed a mention of:
Windows cannot access the file for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or the disk is missing. Windows closed the program Emsisoft Anti-Malware Service because of this error.
Program: Emsisoft Anti-Malware Service
So on a hunch, I uninitialised Emsisoft and rebooted, choose Normal windows, logged on and Bingo, went straight in, no problem..!
Really not sure what all that was about...

First, I would double check to make sure that the machine is getting proper DNS settings. If it is using DHCP, be sure that your scope options are set properly to point to valid DNS servers. For you to process proper logon events, you'll need to be sure to communicate properly with a valid Domain Controller, and DNS is needed.
Also, try removing this machine from your domain, and then adding it back again. This will be sure to reset the secure channel password that the machine needs to be able to communicate as an authenticated member of the domain.
