Upgrading from Server 2003 to 2012, with Exchange
I know there is no simple answer, but looking for the simplest way :)
I have a 2003 Server Standard, running Exchange with about 30 Mailboxes. This server also houses our file sharing.
I have another 2003 Server Standard that is the RDP server. It stores nothing.
I have a server picked out, but curious about the licensing, MS always confuses me and I don't keep up on each version that comes out...
We are a non-profit so we get discounted licensing and software through Tech Soup.
Would it be best to install 2012 Standard with the CALs that I need, install Exchange Server, set it up as a Terminal Services Licensing Server, and install TS CALs. Then use my old PowerEdge server as the new RDP server and install 2008 Standard on that?
Or should I go the VM route and have both on one box, I've never set up VM stuff before so I am always hesitant to do something new when I am on a schedule.
Or is there something better I don't know of yet?
I've never done it, but I assume there is a rather simple way for the new server to inherit all the users and groups, Exchange boxes, etc. dcpromo or something or another...
Thanks!!

Just remember if you wish to use the 2 licenses for virtual machines the machine that hosts the virtual machines must only be a management server .. have only the hyper-v role installed.
