Copying failing Western Digital wd1200 drive to another drive

My old computer died with something burning out in the motherboard. I took out the hard drive and connected it to another computer using a usb connection. The computer reported that the drive could not be used until it was formatted. I tried a couple of times to reconnect and one time the data actually appeared with some problems. Right now it will not come up without some setting of the mbr but I don't want to write to it while it has problems.

What program should I use to get at the data and copy it to another drive?

it showing raw disk because there is corruption is file system ..

run check disk and clear all corruption and then try to copy files...

if that does not work then you need to recover data using recovery software

check it out freeware

chkdsk is dangerous. From what I've heard, it shouldn't be run on a failing drive because it could make things worse.

if you run in read only mode then it will only show corruption status..

if you use parameter like /f  ( fix corruption ) /r ( recover bad sector) then yes it may delete data which are corrupted
seagate makes a good file recovery software

Why are you connecting it with a 'usb connection'? That just adds complexity to the loop...

Is this not a standard SATA drive? If so connect to it natively to look at it...usb just adds more to the equation and might itself be the issue

the first thing is make sure you have a backup
try imaging the drive with Paragon free B&R =:  http://www.paragon-software.com/home/db-express/

if that does not work -  try recovery software - hers ome links, free&commercial

and i agree with smckown - if possible, connect the drive directly to a sata, (or IDE cable)

smckeown777,

The drive is an ide drive from an old XP system whose motherboard burnt out. I don't have any other resource to connect the drive to my system other than the external connector that supports ide and sata but the drive is ide.

nobus,

I don't see how the backup software would work if the drive is not visible through the disk manager. ddrescue might work since Linux might see it and be able to clone the drive. I have a backup of the drive up to May. I want to get the data from May until now.

then try Linux for backup, or try the Paragon B&R for imaging the drive :

it has an option for fixing the OS,  - Boot, and recovery options; worth a try
