color matching for web site

I have chosen a website template for a client and the site is here - http://www.templatemonster.com/demo/44908.html
The client wants to use black and gold and maybe a dark red.  Does anyone have any suggestions about what colors I should use.  Also, by looking at the template where should I change the colors?

Tell your client to either choose another template or charge then for 20hrs of your time.

There is a css file ending in theme685/cache/64c11b414280425783a5b8ead071b106_all.css which is where you will probably make your changes.

There are not really that many elements you need to change.  The theme comes with a psd file but not sure where you actually need it for this.  However, a word of warning: The template is designed to be in the colors as sampled.  The designer has taken care to make the products look good with that color combination.  Once you put your client's products in there, you may be in for a surprise because it will no longer look like the sample.  Now, add black and "gold" and you have a good amount of time on your hand.  I may even spend 10 minutes to take a screen shot and quickly convert the background to black and a few other elements to make sure that is what they want.

Expect a couple of days total time to customize the template.  Maybe it will only take a few hours, but maybe there is some hidden something or their pickyness that will cause you headaches.  I think 20hrs is safe.  If they don't want to spend $1,500 to $2,000 to customize, then have them pick out a new template that they like.

Once they give you a large down payment, then I would make a customization in the color combination they want for approval.

Here is black and silver

Even better, I see on the template monster site they will charge just $99 to change the color theme.  That is your best bet.
I agree with Padas, before you dive into what is effectively restyling the site (chargeable) you need to get congruence with the client that ALL (layout, UI and colourscheme) is what they want.

We always ask them to pick from wireframe for UI, then choose a layout style they like by JPG sample, if they want colour changes, do this on the JPG and use Photoshop to change Hues or individual colours.

It is all about perceived value but that goes both ways, the more "FREE" mockups you do and the more code based they are, the more freebies they expect during the project.

ASKER

Guys, maybe I worded this incorrectly.  I was just wondering about the colours and if anyone new of a few colours that would work well as the clients wants to use black and gold and maybe a dark red.  There are obviously a million variations of these colours.  I am charging the client for my time and am making really good money on this project.
