iscsi target backup

Hi,

I have currently I have 2 Synology NAS' units one is used as the read and write to unit running our iscsi targets and the other NAS I would like to use as a backup for the 1st. i.e. I would like to backup the data contained within the iscsi targets. I know this can be done via 3rd party software such as fBackup etc... I am wanting to know if this data can be backed up directly between the 2 NAS devices.

The specs of the 2 devices are as follows:
Device 1: This device is running the iSCSI targets
Model RS411
Firmware Ver: 4.0-2228

Device 2:
Device 1: This will be used to back up to
Model DS212j
Firmware Ver: 4.1-2661

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Hi SelfGovern,

Thanks for your response.

By backup I mean a mirror copy.

1) How long do I want to retain a backup copy? 2 weeks

2) How often do I want a backup copy to be created? once a week
3) Do care if corruption (from a software bug, a virus, a malicious user) is replicated immediately? Yes
4) With what granularity do I need to restore?  (that is, am I OK with keeping only a weekly copy of each file, or do I need a daily copy, or do I need to be able to produce a copy from 3:17 PM last Tuesday?) weekly copy is fine
5) What protection do I have or need if there is a site disaster (flood, fire)?  Will it take out all my backups, or do I still have protection? this is exactly what I am trying to achieve, DS212J which will hold the backups is located in a seperate builing to the RS411 running the synology's so the aim is to always have a backup available.

Hi SelfGovern

Thanks again for your detailed responses, I will indeed follow your lead and jump onto the Synology Website and also ask them the question and see what I can find out.
You're welcome -- I'm sorry I didn't have the info at my fingertips; I've never used a Synology box myself.

I worked how to backup between the 2 synology servers, its a feature under "LUN Backup" within the Control Panel of the Synology.

However, I have not yet got this entirely working just yet as I need purchase larger capacity drives to support the capacity of the LUN I will be backing up.
