Can't access server

I can't access my main server via rdp or logmein.

We have one server. It has Windows server 2008R2 standard and three hyper-v role installed. We are running 3 virtual machines running within that server. All the servers are working and I can ping the main server. So that means the main server is working.

Any ideas how I can access that server?

I really do not want to restart the entire environment.

Can you log in locally to the server in question?  If you can, look at the remote desktop settings and make sure remote access is enabled.

Right click "Computer" click properties from the context menu.

On the left side click remote settings

Check that "Allow Connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (Less Secure) is selected.

Click "select Users"

If you are not a domain administrator or your account is not already in the "Administrators" group on that server, make sure to add your account to this list.

Good luck.

Also, check your firewall to see if this access is being blocked.

Do you an error?
Hi,

It could be your windows firewall which is causing the issue. In 2008 server, the windows firewall service can be started but the profile should be off unless you have correct ports and exceptions in place.

You can off the firewall from control panel>>windows firewall>advance settings. The services can be checked from start>>run>>services.msc

I can always log in to this server whether remotely or local.  I can't today whether remote or local. I am the admin as well
The firewall is enabled. I'm thinking maybe restarting the service for logmein and rdp. How can I access the services from another local computer?
If logged on as domain admin right-click computer -> manage and once open click to connect to another computer. Rest will be clear to you.

If you suddenly cannot login locally or remotely either the rpc is down or the machine is lost how to authenticate you.
Maybe your session is locked on this server. You could try to free that session.
Logon to any computer as domain admin, open command prompt and type:
quser /SERVER:ÿourservername
Locate your session id number and remember, next type in command prompt:
logoff <id-number> /SERVER:yourservername.
Try to logon again.

Last resort will be a reboot. From any connected pc in the domain, log in as domain admin -> open command prompt and type:   shutdown -i
Sure you will know what to do next.

I still wonder, do you get an error while connecting via RDC (even if it is in a flash)?
If I log off will that shut off the hyper v console?
After tying to connect to the server doing this "logged on as domain admin right-click computer manage and once open click to connect to another computer"

I get the error as seen on the picture
Ok remote procedure services are not responding. The logoff will not shutdown the hyper v machines.
Ok since this the only server we have and the hyper v machines are hosted from this server. Since logging off will not sure down the hyper v machines.

Than what exactly would happen if I kill my session?
You will free your session. The server runs fine without your session.
Ok I got into the office and I plugged in a monitor and I got into the server.

The server has no internet (I cant surf the web, but the hyper-v machines that are hosted on the same server do)

I have a lot of
Event ID 1206 ADWS ""Active Directory Web Services was unable to determine if the computer is a global catalog server" "

Event ID 1863 ActiveDirectory_DomainService

Event ID 1054 GroupPolicy

Event ID 1059 DHCP-Server

Any help with this would be very helpful please
Run dcdiag and see what comes out
on the CMD? what command do you want me to run? just dcdiag?
Yes thats it
I ran dcdiag and i got the following.

Directory Server Diagnosis

Performing initial setup:
Trying to find home server...
Home Server = DH8TYDN1
Ldap search capability attribute search failed on server DH8TYDN1, return
value = 81
Please go to services.msc and restart active directory domain services.
That service is started. If i restart it off what will happen to the users that are currently connected to the network? I have another server which is a hyper- machine (Exchange server) which has roles of active directory domain services, application server, DNS server, File Services, Web Server (IIS)

I just noticed that both the main server which is the DHCP, Active directory and DNS has the same service stopped as the Exchnage server.

the service is Distributed Link Tracking Client (trkwks) Status:Stopped Startup Type:Manual
Anymore advice Patrick? Im stuck like chuck here
Hi again,

I am sorry, having some minor issues that also need some attention.
Did you restart AD domain services or afraid you might hit people? This is not the case, only consequence can be that new logons will have to wait a couple of minutes thats all.

If you have done this allready please let me know.
Yeah I was afraid it might hit people. But if you are certain it only affects not connections than I will do it. should I also do it on the exchange server which has an active directory?

thank you for your guidance and time
Hi again,

No, just on the server that is reporting 'Active Directory Web Services was unable to determine if the computer is a global catalog server'
Just tried it. All the services restarted but issue persists.

When I go to DHCP it says "Cannot find DHCP server"
When I go to DNS it says "Configure a DNS server"

Nothing in this network has changed

Maybe strange to ask but you have another server with active directory domain services, is there a time difference between those two? (are they out of timesync?)
Im going to reboot the server now. All servers have the same time
Any update?
I rebooted and everything came up. The DNS was found emails up, internet up, replication is good on the AD. The DHCP took a while to work. Is that normal?

I still do not know what caused this. Is it because I haven't shut off the server in about 2 years?

Glad to read you are up and running but OOHHH 2 years?
Please reschedule your mind and run windows updates once a month.
there are memoryflaws, vulnerabillities fixed end so on bugs and featurea fixed regurlarly.
so you think the issue was maybe the system run time has been 2 years without a reboot?
I am pretty sure it is the exact reason. Windows servers need adequate maintenance.
even though i am glad you are back to working again.
Thank you so much. If I could give you 1000 points i would.
Thank you but again! I am glad you are up and running.
