Any opinions on modem, router renting?

I just had a rough modem, router setup experience. Geek Squad said it was dead and I needed a new one.
One mentioned that he rents his from Charter, or whoever. They fix rented hardware.

I found this Time warner modem rental discussion here

They can come tomorrow morning.
Good plan?

Why not buy a modem on their list, if, it seems, you could get one that pays for itself in a year?

Well, for whatever reason, I am always having to on/off my router or restart the system several times a day. I suspect this may be related to the fact that my modem did not use a password and my townhome complex neighbors were siphoning off my bandwidth. That page says their modem is a few bucks a month. That seems a seriously decent deal for any future problems? The agent says they come to my house.
Why did the Geek Squad Agent advise it if it isn't the right thing to do . During his"mission" to My house?
Thanks

lol   I like that one.  I was trying to think of a nice way to say what I thought of them.     : )
I'm embarrassed to say,
but even though all this advice was excellent, when the Time Warner repair tech arrived on the scene, he determined that my cable wiring was messed up, and that my modem, router setup was fine.
no need to be embarrassed. this is how you learn things.   : )
