Double-clicking email message file in Finder search results attaches it rather than opening

Hi there,

My user is running Outlook 2011 for Mac.  We recently installed it, and it brought mail forward from Entourage 2008.  I then checked for Office updates and installed a 14.3 update.  The user reported this issue after I installed the update, but it's possible it was there after the Outlook 2011 install too, and she just didn't identify it yet.

I understand that Spotlight indexes your mail.  So in Finder, my user does a search, and the result list shows a number of email messages.  The problem is when she double-clicks on one of the found email messages in the result list.

Expected behaviour:  email message opens up and you can see what's inside it.  From, to, subject, body, etc.

Actual action:  instead, we get a new blank email message window, with our found email message ready to be sent as an attachment.

How do I change this to the expected behaviour?

Thanks!

Ah, I think you are absolutely right.  The Entourage Identity files are still there, and so why should Spotlight not continue to search them.

I'll check back with the client next time I'm there and have had a chance to change that.  In the meantime, I'll mark the question answered.  If it turns out still to be a problem I can update the question at that time.  (It may be a few weeks till I'm back there, so I don't think I can hold the question open.)

Thanks, and I'll keep in mind Apple Mail as an alternative as well.

You could also go into Spotlight preferences and turn off indexing for the Entourage folder within the Microsoft User Data folder. I think however that Entourage maintains a special set of indexable files - created specifically to make things searchable by Spotlight - somewhere that are then linked to the database. I don't know if those index files are kept in the Microsoft User Data folder or somewhere else such as in Application Support or the like...
