Acronis True Image 2010 corrupting MFT file and backup

Hey all,
Lately I have been having problems with our imaging software Acronis True Image 2010. Often when trying to back up a windows 7 machine it gives me an error similar to "the name or location is invalid please try again" however it has seen and accessed the target ext drive. If I close out and try to use the ext drive on another machine it needs to format. This has happened to 4 separate drives.  After some tracking I found the Master File Table (MFT) and its back up are corrupt. Has any one heard of this before? We have used Acronis for years and this has only recently started happening but we are just now in the process of migrating to Win 7. This has worked flawlessly on XP and on 7  many times and I can"t seem to find a reason why this "ramdomly" happens on some backup attempts and not others. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

From my memory this is a write-rights issue.
Normally i am not so fond advising this but try to give the "EVERYONE" , "FULL CONTROL" in  on the destination folder on that external HDD.

This should get you going, if it succeeds you can always experiment with LOCAL SYSTEM or any appointed local backup user.....

Hi SCAIT, large external usb drives under Windows that store many files can develop file allocation errors. I do not know the exact cause but have had that problem many times. The solution I've found was to keep the file number to a minimum either by deleting or compressing the files.

There are many forum discussions on the internet. haven't found any conclusive answers except it happens with big usb external HDDs.

Hope it helps.
.... continued.... are you experiencing any Delay Write failures on $MFT and are unable to access the drive? Access to drive maybe restored after running a chkdsk x: /f

chkdsk x: ?f could not recover the mft or its backup.
The MFT (Master File Table) is sometimes corrupted. If Microsoft's Checkdisk (chkdsk) failed to repair the MFT, run TestDisk. In the Advanced menu, select your NTFS partition, choose Boot, then Repair MFT. TestDisk will compare the MFT and MFT mirror (its backup). If the MFT is damaged, it will try to repair the MFT using the backup. If the MFT backup is damaged, it will use the main MFT.

If both MFT and MFTMirr are damaged and thus cannot be repaired using TestDisk, you might want to try commercial software like Zero Assumption Recovery, GetDataBack for NTFS or Restorer 2000.

Here's one possible reason :
do these ext drives have their own power supply?
too low power from USB can cause this (usb 2 max power = 5V at 0.5 A = 2.5 W)
if they do not have their own power - use a POWERED USB hub : http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=158910

also -bad usb to stat bridges can cause it also

**i had the same happening on an  1TB WD drive (but was able to fix it)
I doubt the problem is in ATI. But first of all make sure you have the latest version and second be sure that the drives themselves are ok. If they get enough power and if they pass CHKDSK.

Defiantly some options to check out. I'll have to look into some of these and let you guys know what I find. USB power could be an issue as 3 out of the 4 are brand new tested good working drives this has happened on are USB 3.0 and the machines are 4+ years old so usb 2.0 at best.

TestDIsk was unsuccessful as BOTH the mft and its backup were corrupt and I didn't have any luck with zero assumption recovery.
If you have some newer PC to install ATI on and connect the drive for backup then you can easily find the culprit.
Also, on old machine use powered USB hub.
does acronis 2010 handle usb 3 properly?
here tomf says :  ATIH2010build7160 does recognize USB3.0 devices.

If all else fails, you can try taking the external usb drive encolosure apart. Then plug the drive like any other HDD on a pc. Should make it easier and faster to fix.
