Exchange 2007 mailbox size
I'm running SBS 2008 with five W8 workstations. The Exchange 2007 component of SBS 2008 has SP3 installed.
Some users are reporting delays with Email and screen freezes in Outlook. These users all currently have 3GB+ mailboxes as well as extensive Email archives.
Would reducing these mailboxes to under 1GB help alleviate these problems?

Many thanks for your prompt response. I'm pretty sure that Outlook 2013 which we are using installs in cache mode by default.
I've asked the users to administer their mailboxes as you suggest. I'll update you on progress later.

Okay.
Size of the mailbox doesn't really matter. 3gb is nothing - if it was 30gb then you might have a problem.
The performance problems come from the number of items in the key folders (Inbox and Send Items). You should try and keep those below 5000 for optimum levels.
I never recommend reducing the size of the mailbox because that just means users create PST files, which get corrupted and are impossible to backup. Much better to keep it in Exchange with a decent folder structure.

That makes sense. How about the maximum number of folders contained in the Inbox?
No issue with that. It is just the number of items.

Running Exchange 2007 here with Outlook 2013. The errors seem to be within Outlook 2013 as the pushed Email to the users iPhones has no problems.

Well, I'm still having problems and I'm really beginning to think that the mailbox size is the key. The most troublesome mailbox has the quota removed and is currently close to 5GB.
The small mailboxes (<100MB) have no problems at all.

Ask user to reduce it.
So here are my recommendation:
1) Reduce mailbox size
2) Reduce Folder Counts
3) Reduce message count per folder. 20000 is the limit in 2007
4) Use Outlook with Cache mode
5) Use Archiving solution.
Hope this helps.
