Netgear R6300 5GHz network not available to some devices

I just purchased a Netgear R6300.  My needs at home have changed in recent months with heavier use of streaming services as well as more people in the house thus greater demands on the bandwidth.

The R6300 allows you to set up two unique SSID's:  one for the 2.4GHz b/g/n wireless network that I named "HOMEn" and one for the 5GHz a/n/ac wireless network which I named "HOMEac".

Once everything was setup and running I began connecting devices.  My phone found both the "HOMEn" and "HOMEac" as did my Surface RT.  However, none of my "smart" media devices (Smart TV and DVD player) can see the "ac" network, only the "n".  All of these devices have "n" adapters but I'm not understanding why the "ac" network is not available?  It is supposed to be backwards compatible with "n" devices.

What am I missing or doing wrong?

Ok, I'm starting to make some progress on this issue and your suggestion helped push me along.  However, I have confirmed that at least one of these devices that is not recognizing the 5GHz network is a dual band adapter.  So, there must be something else going on.

I'm going to continue to troubleshoot this issue and look for a definitive solution.
Have you set up the network key on it?  Or is it one of those 'auto-connect' things?  Look for Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) Method in the manual.
