Acceptable ping time on LAN?
I'm pinging a network adaptor on an NEC Aspire phone system with a standard 32byte continuous ping. I'm getting back various response times ranging from 1ms to 7ms. At the same time, I've pinged other hosts on the same switch and I get response times of less than 1ms. I've tried issolating it by taking it off the lan and pinging it while it's on a seperate switch and still getting wild results of 1ms to 7ms, Is this a sign of a bad NIC card?

That was why I asked if there was active calls corresponding to the slower response times.
I know but it often seems that people think 'ping' is an Important service when it is generally not. As you probably know, 'ping' or ICMP is often turned off for a variety of reasons. Worse yet, 'ping' is at such a low level that while it may tell you that you have a connection, almost every other network service like FTP and HTTP can still be down while 'ping' works.

I agree, 7ms is nothing to worry about.

After getting all the correct ip addresses from the Phone vendor that were used by the phone voip card(s), Found out it was actually an ip conflict with a DVR server installed on the network. But I think a few of the expert comments deserve points because they coincide with a few things the phone vendor said as well.
Thank you all

And thank you. Good find.
You can also use Wireshark to do a packet capture. This will show the actual traffic and see if there are any problems, such as retransmissions or dropped packets.
Does the phone system only have a single NIC? You should also be able to check the phone system itself to see if it is detecting any network errors. I am not familiar with the NEC Aspire system itself, but many systems do have logs/statistics you can check.
Could the phone system be a bit slower to respond to pings when calls are active?
7ms will not cause any issues with call quality by itself. Is this something that has just started, or did you put in a new system and are just checking it out now?
