BES 5.0.4 and BES 10.1 Co-Existence

I'm in the process of installing BES 10 on a new server. We presently have BES 5.0.4 in our environment.  The management database is on a separate SQL 2008 VM. BES 5.0.4 database connectivity is through SQL port 1433.

Question is, does the new BES 10 instance use the same port 1433 or does it need to use a separate port? It won't let me assign it dynamically in the port configuration.

Thanks in advance.

When I try to select a dynamic port configuration, it gives me an error: Microsoft SQL Server does not support using a dynamic port with an unnamed instance.

I'm reluctant to select the same port 1433 that SQL is presently using with BES 5.0.4, unless this is confirmed OK.
Hi fireguy1125,

BES5 and BES10 are separate installations requiring separate SQL database instances. BES10 interfaces can be used to administer the BES5 server but it maintains its own database. Install it on a new instance.

If you are considering installing the BDS and UDS components of BES10, I would recommend installing them on their own separate servers, too.

Mike
Hi fireguy1125,

have you tried using the same port 1433 for both.I mean without using the Dynamic port.
I am not completely sure about this.. But to know knowledge two instances can use the same port.
So can you please try installing with about changing the port number and let us know the status..
For BES 5 you must be using BESMGMT instance.
and
Similarly create a new SQL instance for BES 10 like BDSMGMT or anything similar.

Page 21 of the  "Blackberry_device_service_61.2_Installatiotn_and_Configuation_Guide_en.pdf:
 Unsupported Environments:
"You cannot connect the BlackBerry Device Service and the BlackBerry Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express to the same BlackBerry Configuration Database. To run the BlackBerry Device Service and the BlackBerry Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express in the same organization, you can configure one BlackBerry Configuration Database for the BlackBerry Device Service instances, and another BlackBerry Configuration Database for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server instances or BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express instances."
Thanks, I understand that they require separate databases, the existing DB is BESMGMT, the new DB i'm entering in the setup is BES10MGMT.  My concern is regarding specifically the SQL port, since the BES 5 Db is static configured to port 1433 - should I be using a different port for the BES 10 server. I guess this may be more tied to a SQL based question - as what dictates the port usage -is it a shared port amongst all the database connections - so say I had 5 databases instances on the one SQL server, are they all using port 1433 to connect to the SQL server, or is the port corresponding to each database, such as 5 databases would use ports 1433, 1434, 1435, 1436, and 1437 respectively?  So in this case would I have to configure a new port, says port 1434 to use with new BES10MGMT database?
Also, I have NOT tried using the same, port, as I'm unsure of the behavior of this option, and I don't want to break existing BES5 connectivity on the same port 1433 until I know this is OK and does not affect BES5 connectivity.
