How do I set up remote desktop in XP to control Vista Home Basic?
How do I set up remote desktop in XP to control a Vista Home Basic PC? I have XP that will remote a Win7 & win8, and win7 that will remote XP & Win8 etc. everything talks to everything except Vista Basic. I am going around in circles...certain in the knowledge that I have missed some elementary step.
All PC's are on a private home group network - DHCP services via wireless / fixed / router and switch. All home devices communicating perfectly internally and externally in this set-up.
I have checked Firewall settings, having even elected to disable all on XP and Vista - no connection.
There is no secondary antivirus or security software running.
Sharing is enabled on both machines
Account is "mirrored" on both machines
Network discovery ./ sharing settings are set to ON except for Password Protected Sharing.
Vista is configured as Private Network - workgroup setting entered.
I have eventfully set the machine as a static address (DHCP / Static - I would not think that this will have any effect on the issue).
Have tried flushing the DNS - Stopped and Restarted - on both PC's
Tried editing the host file (in XP) to include the Vista IP
Have checked that the correct port is open and listening (I believe this is 3389)
As a bit of a novice with this, I would appreciate if there is a step by step solution.
Many thanks in advance.

Follow on to this thread. TightVNC worked perfectly on first one. On second - keep -closing with out connecting (fromXP) - the Vista reports that VNC has had an error and has been shut down. Given that both Vista are clean builds and the settings are the same on both - bit puzzled why it works on one and not the other. Ideas?
