Want to Virtualize SBS2008

I have an existing server that is running SBS2008. I want to virtualize the SBS on the same server box and I need to install a Physical OS andf then P to V SBS. I cannot find clear or concise instuctions on how to perform this task. Any help would really be appreciated.

My preference would be to use Hyper-V but I am not ruling out VMware.

Lot of confusion for me..

let me understand setup

1) you have physical server running with SBS2008
Now your plan is to Virtualize thi SBS Server

So you have got another hardware where it may be HyperV or EXsi

so first you will ready other server with this hypervisor .. and after that you will move this SBS server (physical server in to newly created machine )

correct me if this is plan of action.

before wipe make sure you have complete backup :)
Backup is always good but as you're converting physical machine to VHD. Backup is as such not required. If the VHD conversion process is successful and to verify that the VHD created is proper. You can test it on another HyperV machine(if you have) by creating VM. Or if you have a Windows 7 desktop, you can mount the VHD file and verify data inside that.
Two things to consider,a vhd cannot be larger than 2.2 tb and with Vmware,you need the paid version to be able to use 3rd party backups like Veeam or Acronis.

I will be reusing the same hardware. Is the only way to do this to format the drive and install server core with Hyper-V? I figure I need at least 4 backups to ensure I am safe.
using at least 2 different backup strategies

As far as I know,the built in Windows back up saves the file as a vhd,so a p2v conversion for M$ hyper V might not be necessary if you are all ready using the program.

The only gotcha is the disk backup cannot use 4k sector drives or be larger than 2 tb.
Thanks for all the tips and ideas. I REALLY appreciate it
