Windows Server 2012 DNS not handing out A records for DHCP Ubuntu clients
Hi,
I have a Windows Server 2012 AD, DNS and DHCP all on one server.
On the Windows side everything works the way it should.
Windows 7 and 8 clients can connect and DHCP will handout IP address and build the correct A record automatically.
Now when I connect a Ubuntu client to the network. "Any Ubuntu distro"
It pulls the correct IP address from the DHCP server and the correct DNS. Everything works, the client can access the internet and local network resources.
But my problem is Windows DNS, its not giving the Ubuntu clients DNS A records like it dose with the windows clients.
My current fix is to give the Ubuntu client a reservation in the Windows DHCP server then build a DNS A record.
Is there a fix so that Windows DNS and DHCP will automatically build A records for Ubuntu clients?
Thank you.

What version of Ubuntu are you using and what NIC do the clients have? It's a known issue and problems range from slow dns resolving to just none.
I would check the following. In the DHCP Management console, right click on the Scope and choose properties, under the DNS tab make sure the following are checked:
-Enable DNS dynamic updates according to the settings below
-Always dynamically update DNS A and PTR records
-Discard A and PTR records When needed
-Dynamically update DNS A and PTR records for DHCP clients that do not request updates (for example, clients running Windows NT4)
The last one is not necessary for XP and newer but probably is required for non-windows clients, such as Ubuntu
