E-mail deletion issue/question
We have our e-mail system setup in such a way that if someone shift+deletes an e-mail in Outlook 2010, they are still able to recover the e-mail in Outlook using the recover option.
Our question is if they delete it from that option/window, how long does it reside on the server or is it gone for good? Could it be recovered the following morning from backup? We have our Exchange 2010 server save deleted e-mail for 14 days so even e-mail that is deleted from the recover option could still be recovered from a backup tape 14 days later?

Right, that is how we have it configured but my question is if a user gets an e-mail and then Shift+Deletes that e-mail and then goes into Recover Deleted Items and deletes that same e-mail, is it still on the server?

So a user gets an e-mail and then Shift+Deletes that e-mail and then goes into Recover Deleted Items and deletes that same e-mail, it is still on the server and can be recovered from the dumpster area 14 days later (our setting)?
offcource not....

If the item's deletion timestamp is beyond the deleted item retention period, then the item is not available for end user recovery. Instead, the user must call Help Desk and request recovery of the item. This involves:
1.The user knowing when he deleted the item.
2.The Exchange administrator locates a backup that contains the item in question.
3.The Exchange administrator successfully restores the database to a recovery storage group.
4.The Exchange Administrator extracts the deleted item and provides it back to the user. This of course assumes that there is a policy that allows for single item restoration and that this process isn't a really low priority for the Exchange administrator.

But my question is if the e-mail was deleted from "Recover Deleted Items" the same day it came in, is it still recoverable from the database as it is in the deletion timestamp period set on the server? So an e-mail comes in, the user instantly deletes it using Shift+Delete, goes right to Recover Deleted Items and deletes it there right away. Can this e-mail still be recovered?
yes

Okay, thank you.
If you hard Delete a Item - Example- (Shift+Delete) - It goes Directly to Dumpster - Which can be accessed using “Recover Deleted Items”
So,Even if you delete item from the deleted items from your outlook 2010, you can go to the tab under folder on the main page of the outlook 2010 and click “Recover Deleted Items” and view the items on the list.

restoring a sinlge mail from backup does not make any sence..
instead you can define the dumpster settings from server.
