Android Tablet

Using a Samsung Galaxy tablet trying to print to a HP Photosmart 5520.

The Samsung has AT&T cell service to connect to the internet.  The tablet sees the wifi printer in the listing of available networks.

When trying to print a message comes up that says "must print to a Samsung printer".  The third party print apps (and I've tried several, including HPs) will not print.

We have no internet and no local network. No router's are involved.  The setup is direct from tablet to wifi printer using the tablet wifi.

I'm wondering if the cell service is the way the tablet gets on the internet, and then the switch to wifi to see the printer is part of the problem

This is the first time I've tried this and it's all new to me.

The tablet has to be on the same wifi network as the printer. As in you need to have a home wifi connection. the printers wifi will not accept incoming connections.
The printers wifi will only connect out to a wifi signal, via a wifi router.
That printer I believe is also capable of e-print, but then again, you need to have Internet service. The setup you currently have will not work without some sort of wifi router in place.

Have you enabled Wireless Direct for your Photosmart 5520?

What do you want to print? You can just print PDF document and photos for Photosmart 5520.

"Wireless Direct

HP also equipped the Photosmart 5520 with Wireless Direct, which allows Wi-Fi devices such as laptops and smartphones to send files directly to the printer without using a wireless router. Enabling Wireless Direct on the 5520 is as easy as tapping a few buttons on the control panel. Users can also see what their 5520's wireless name and password are by tapping "Display Password" or "Display Name" (these can be changed through the embedded Web server).

When we used our Droid X to print the same 2-page color PDF using Wireless Direct, the 5520 received the file and printed it out in 44 seconds. A 4 x 6 color photo took slightly longer, at 57 seconds, although this was a major improvement over the time it took to print the photo using ePrint. Unfortunately, we weren't able to get our phone to recognize the wireless connection when we tried to print the 2-page Word document."

I stand corrected. My apologies. Next time I will not assume it is the same as mine and will double-check.

Please disregard my first post.

ePrint could be the solution but will be a sophisticated one as the Android tablet is connected to connect to the internet via AT&T cell service.

Thanks for your help.

I do have wireless direct turned on the printer. I can see the printer from the tablet when I switch from cell to wireless.  At that point I try to print the document and get the message must print to a samsung printer.

When I switch back to cell I lose the printer connection, at least as far as what it says.

do you think adding a regular router (with no internet service) would allow it act as a print server from the printer to the tablet?.
Further research, this seems more of a Samsung tablet problem than it is a printer problem as the tablet is looking specifically for a Samsung Wireless Printer to print to.  Many have this issue and have had to do workarounds.

There have been many workarounds for this issue, but they involve installing the printers respective android app and then printing through that, to an internet connected printer.

In other words, using ePrint on your printer.  But without internet, your ePrint will not work.

I'm going to step aside and let someone else chime in that may have a solution for you.
Have you looked at Google Cloud Printing?

I have had very good luck with it.
DMT tech group.

Yes I have considered the Google Cloud.

My problem seems to be that this Samsung tablet is only on the internet through a internal AT&T cell connection, and I have no traditional internet access. (Cable or DSL)

I can see the printer when switching to the "printer idenitiy" using the tablet wifi, but can't print a web page.  To see the web page I have to be using the cell connection and then it can't see or link to the printer.

You thoughts?

Thanks.
Google cloud print is a middle man.. you print to the cloud then your printer either direct if it supports it or by a PC connection then gets the file an prints it.
Sorry, but I'm confused.

If there is no internet in the house, only the AT&T cell connection on the tablet, how does the print job get to the printer from the cloud?

The printer is only wifi capable, there is no internet and no router in this house.

Sorry for being so slow on this.

Thanks.  The dummies link I understand.  And from that I see how this could work.

As an update on this issue, my customer with the problem has taken my advice and taken a subscription for interent service to the house, we will add a cheap router and I think the problem will be solved.  Will know on Friday morning when I install the router.

Back to the Hotspot issue.  I'm not sure his Samsung Tablet has the Hotspot feature.  I don't remember seeing it when I was looking at the setup page.  And I spent a lot of time on that page looking for possible solutions.

Will let you know in a couple days.

Thanks.
