Where should I begin looking to find out why I get this popup as soon as I highlight a alphanumbeic selection from a popup list. If I choose just a number it works ok.

In fact, there are 2 versions of FileMaker: FileMaker Pro 12 and FileMaker Pro 12 Advanced, these are also available as FileMaker Server versions... I guess the first step would be to find out which version is installed!

Changed it to an Edit Box. That seems to be ok for now. I am working on a clone so I can do some experimenting. Using version 10.
The field validation setup can be found under File -> Manage Database under the "Options" for the field that's throwing the error. There is a separate tab for Field validation with a number of options including the ability to run calculations on the entry. Sometimes fields may also have Script Triggers that run when you enter, exit or otherwise modify or navigate into or out of a field. A script trigger runs a script which by it's nature can be as detailed as the developer wants in terms of multiple error checks and error reporting dialogs or actions.

Validation only on creation and there is no 'Strict Data type'
The field contains all numeric, all alpha, and some mixed entries.
