Windows Server 2003 won't release files after users close them from their desktops

I have a server that will not release files after the users close them from their desktop.  It is a mixed environment with Macs running os 10.8 and PC's running windows 7 SP 1.  Users are graphic artists using anything from Indesign files to .pdf.  Other users can be working in excel files, close the files then go back into them and they would appear as read only.  What could be causing the server to keep them in use?

Many thanks in advance.

Looking at the share I don't see any ~files listed.  I've seen those before and thought that could be the issue.  I do have AVG on my server and I have changed the search to look at just the windows directory instead of the shared drives for now.

I'll turn on auditing to the share and keep an eye out for the next 24 hours.
get tools from sysinternals.com (will redirect to technet.microsoft.com/)
There you can see what process is locking up the files.
