asked on

web camera - should I be able to zoom?

I have a Gen IV DVR camera system.  WE switched from covad to fios for people to see the cameras from outside.  one of the users is saying she doesn't have zoom / tilt / pan anymore.

I don't know the cameras they have, but all I was able to do was do digital zoom.

Any way to know if she's mistaken / how to tell if the cameras have Tilt zoom pan or what, short of getting on a ladder to see the cameras up close.

thanks

ASKER

they are coax connected from what I can see. can tilt / zoom pan signals carry over coax?

Hello
Coax is a popular and proven technology. Because almost all CCTV cameras and monitors
accept coax connections, no media conversion is required. Coax's low attenuation and resistanceto EMI makes it an excellent choice for transmission distances of as long as 1500 feet (and longer if repeaters are used). Both inbound video and outbound PTZ (Pan, Tilt, Zoom) commands can travel over the same cable

so it's another problem
this gen IV system talks about an RS-485 connection on the back of the unit, which does have wires heading out of the box.  Maybe the wires came loose?

from what I am reading, it seems coax carries the video and these other wires carry control signals for PTZ?
if it's like that you have to check it some how
Glad to help
