Best way to do this - public facing SSRS server

Got a question.

For a company that's going to be providing payroll information for employees (the employee will log in with their SS#, etc) what's the best way to handle that when they have to get into a SSRS server?

I know we could make the SSRS server public facing, and have the users log directly into it, BUT i worry about the security of that type setup.

Another concern is if there are 20,000 employees, if we use NT type authentication, would we need 20,000 Active Directory licenses?

Looking for any suggestions.

Definitively go with the Windows authentication option. Also,

1) I'm assuming you are already paying for Windows licenses both servers and desktop, so no additional licenses would be required.

2) In terms of SQL licenses, I guess you're paying per processor and not per user.

I would suggest the following:

The issue is with the Windows licenses is the company that provides the payroll information only has a few dozen employees, but they're providing payroll info for companies that have thousands of employees.
