Maintenance on Second Storage

I am planning to do some maintenance on our second email storage.

This storage group is for archival purposes only. All email delivered to any recipient in the first storage group is forwarded as a copy for compliance reasons.

I need to perform some maintenance on this HDD where the 2nd storage group is located.

If I dismount the 2nd storage group and take the disk offline, what will happen to the mail destined for the archive? Will it queue and deliver once the storage database is back online? Or will is report failures/delayed mail?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

just having the database dismounted would cause the mail to remain in queue and deliver once it's mounted again

As long as the Storage Group is active, Exchange will accept mail addressed to a user's mailbox in a dismounted database without generating a nondelivery report (NDR) and will attempt to deliver the mail after the administrator or Exchange has remounted the database. If the database remains dismounted for more than the defined time limit for holding mail (the default is 2 days), Exchange will return the mail as undeliverable.

It will queue all the emails on transaction logs till the database is back online. Be careful not to remove those logs.
