server dns conflict with router

I connect my server 2003 and 4 windows xp machine to a 8=port router. I found the server dns doesn't work properly

If your Server 2003 is a domain controller with DHCP and DNS, disable DHCP on the router and add the gateway/router IP on your DHCP scope.

I tried to use server 2003 active directory but needs to access internet through the router for all of my connected machines.
