Need software recommendation

I need a software recommendation (for a free/open source product).

I've started using "Compendium" (developed in the UK) a few days ago.   This tool seemed very promising for creating a data repository on a) developing a literature map and b) adding "children" records into the parent record (i.e., subject and authors... 1:many relationship).

Please see URL below:

Sample screenshots of what I'm trying to achieve:

Unfortunately, half way into my data entry, I'm now experiencing a "bug" where certain records cannot be located via the Search function.    That is, sometimes it does find the record... and then it won't.   Weird but that's what I've experienced.

That said, does anyone know of an alternative (free) software product that provides similar capabilities.   Btw, I don't want to use "MindMap" or "FreeMind".    I tried them and they don't offer what I'd like to achieve.

Who is Participating?
I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

In this article, there's a section called "Non-paid software":

It contains the ones that you don't want, but there are numerous others. I haven't tried any of them, but it's a good place to start your investigation. Regards, Joe

Thanks for the link to the numerous software products... I appreciate it.

VUE looks very promising... I'm downloading right now.

Again, thanks!
