How to enter a comment

My Data base has a form (a unique row of data, with FileNo that is the Primary Key of the record source) that the user enters various information. One of the items they would like to enter is a status.  They would like a Pull down with some pre-canned responses, but would like to be able to enter free text (not on the pull down list).  There could be multiple status's entered so one day they could enter a value from the pull down and the next day they would enter free text.  So there would be a new row created each time they entered a status.

I would like this to be on the existing form, perhaps use a subform?  And I want to make sure the status they enter links to the  FileNO on the form, so that I can later use this on a report for each record.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I really dislike the idea of a combobox used to enter "free text"

If they type a value not on the list, you should add functionality to add it to the list.
...else you have no control over the free text, and I am not sure how you would make sure it is valid.
457.12 for a name field?
John, jhon, Jon, johnn, ...ect

Can you explain why free text is needed, and if you want to eventually store these free text entries in the list.

Sometimes the status would not be the one of the pre canned responses

Then why not add it to the list?

Can you post an example in the context of your data entry procedure?
Hate to be obvious, but that is what the term 'Other' is for. And, if 'Other', allow entry to a text box for storage. After a while, the new status would be worth adding to the combo box.

Then Make "Other" a selection in the combobox, then create a separate textbox and Field in a table to store the "Free text", ...

<And I want to make sure the status they enter links to the  FileNO >

If you do the above, then the freetext will be linked to "other" hence it will be linked to the FileNO
