Outlook 2003 pst files will not open as default

Hi.

I have a problem with an installation of Outlook 2003. The program crashes when opening. It does this in either safe or normal mode. I have tried running scanpst it found and repaired errors but it is still doing it. It does not give specifics when crashing just it has encountered an error maybe there is a log somwhere? If I generate a new pst file and use that as default Outlook starts ok I can then open the original pst with no problem I just cannot run it as default. I have disabled all add-ins.

Any ideas?

Thanks Nick

Hello nsteele84,
you can start with new .PST, connect old one and copy data to new. Dont forget to copy callendar, contacts and tasks.

Hi
Can you check how large that PST is that you're trying to open? There are 2 different versions of the PST-file. One that can handle only about 2GB and one that can handle about 20GB. The later one came with Outlook 2003. If it is a PST created pre-Outlook 2003, you shall never exceed the 2GB limit or the file will end up corrupted.

There are different tools for fixing this kind of problem. Scanpst is one of them and there are some 3rd party ones. Unfortunately most of the 3rd party tools cost money and doesn't promise so much either.

Try open the PST as a secondary file in your Outlook and see if Outlook can do a better job with it.

Hi.

The file is 6GB and is in 2003 format I was trying to get away from creating a new file as the user has over 30,000 messages on his server that have to be downloaded again with a new file. Nick
If the old .PST is corrupted, this is clean process. 30 000 messages is not much, it will take about 30 to 45 minutes..

I have been looking into this further and I have found that the program is crashing on the send and recieve. If I turn off auto send and recieve the program will start up but crashes when I hit Send / Recieve. If I create a new profile and use that then everything works but again it is trying to download all the messages. The majority of these messages have attachments which are all in the mB size.
I downloaded all the messages and deleted and everything was fine. I then sent a new message and it crashed again. So it appears to be crashing on the sending portion. Any ideas?
You tried to create new profile, but it downloaded all the messages from pop3, right? Dou you need those messages on a web? If not, you can delete them and set new profile.

I created a new profile and then it wanted to download all the messages off of the server again so I went through all that and then deleted them. Up to this point everything worked fine. I then tried to send a test message and it crashed.
