windows server 2003 hangs

I have a windows server 2003 that hangs at acpitabl.dat.  If I try to start in normal mode or safe mode it will hang, but if I insert the disk and use fixboot and fixmbr it will work for several hours before it hangs again.  Why do i have to keep using fixboot and fixmbr?
