VS 2010 vs 2012 - how restrictive?

is 2012 much more restrictive than 2010, or 2010 was also like that?

I read that if VS 2012 opens an older version of database file of sql server, in order to do development, that database file has to be converted into sql 2012 format. (the the db files cant be accessed by the older versions of sql server).

was VS 2010 also this way? or 2012 is a big shift in compatability issues?

so VS 2010 has not issues connecting with SQL 2005 or 2000, right? but SQL 2012 wants to make the db exclusive to 2012 edition of sql server?

what is sql 2012 trying to acheive by doing this?
