It's strongly advised to set up at least two heartbeat lines over different media!

You can use network, disk or serial (up to HACMP 6, PowerHA 7 no longer supports extra disk heartbeat, it has by default a shared repository disk suitable for heartbeating).

So set up at least one network connection and additionally a disk or serial connection.
For serial you must be able to provide serial links between nodes, of course.

Many of use define one disk (SAN) heartbeat connection per shared volume group, but that's not mandatory.

Most companies use  network/shared disk as heart beat?  Can we have private link using cross over cable?
Yes, that's possible.
