amd A8 with radeon 8550g

I was looking at some laptops to buy and came across a laptop that had an AMD processor. In the device manager it showed an AMD A8 with radeon technologies and the video card was a radeon 8550g.
on the intel side of things, I usually see something like an I5 but the video is usually something like intel hd graphics 4000.
so I thought the radeon was a pretty good video card for gaming, but the intel hd graphics 4000 was more for your basic computing like using Word, or email.
is that a fair assessment?

The HD 8550g is an integrated processor onboard AMD's Richland APU - It's fairly limited compared with a dedicated desktop card and has no dedicated RAM but instead shares RAM with the CPU.

It rates a little better than the HD4000 but only because the 4000 has just 16 Pixel Shaders compared with the AMD's 256 but neither of them will give you great gaming performance.  They are both compromises for portability.

I guess it depends a lot on what you want to play

If you want to look for direct comparison try

You'll find the 8550G currently ranked #212 and the HD4000 #261
