Linux Mint Maya: How to install Brother DCP135C scanner?

Hi experts!

I lately started using Linux and thus I am new to installation mechanisms, drivers etc. I decided to use Linux Mint 13 (Linux 12.04 LTS kernel) and hope that this was a wise decision for starting with Linux.

Now I need to get my hardware / peripherals working, namely the scanning device of the above mentioned (a little old but still fine) printer.

I installed (or I think I did so) the drivers from the Brother pages

http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_scn.html

and the printer works. Basically I have all settings that I have in Windows, but not as polished... The scanner is not recognized, yet.

Now I need some step-by-step help to get the scanner working and I am sure that for an expert it will be very simple to find out the problem and to correct it. Maybe it is just one line of terminal instruction.

Chances are pretty high you don't need to install any driver. Just look if you have any scanning utility already included (probably under Graphics) and check whether you can scan. If there is no tool already installed that can scan, install one via synaptic. Look for "sane". Then install one or more of those tools. After that you will probably be able to scan from your printer, or also use a camera etc.

I have "Simple Scan" and "gscan2PDF", but they tell me that there is no device in the device-list.

Is my assumption correct that for Linux Mint (which is Debian based if I am not mistaken) I have to install Brother drivers with "deb" extension and not "rpm"?

I used GDebi tool to install (pops up automatically). Maybe I need to download the files and then install via terminal, maybe with different rights?

XSane also reports no device

I've just installed Linux Mint and attached an HP multifunction printer to it. The scanner is recognized automatically and there was no need to install any 3rd party driver from HP. Simple Scan just works. This should work the same with almost every scanner of a multifunction printer, at least when the device is connected directly to the PC via USB cable.

How is your printer connected to the PC?

Here is a screenshot of all Sane / Xsane related packages / installations I have. I am quite sure that this is not how it should look like!?

Which packages should I remove or remove all and reinstall one of them?

It looks fine. How is the printer connected? It could be that you have an issue when it is via the LAN, and not directly attached to the PC.

Somehow I have a problem to uninstall brscan2 as it seems the folders are already removed, but Synaptics still tries to remove them. How can I fix that?

First do a sudo apt-get update, maybe that will fix the issue. Or just open synaptic from your GUI and then look if there is any broken package.

sudo apt-get update does not work, it says it cannot lock the administration directory..!?

"Sperren des Administrationsverzeichnisses (/var/lib/dpkg/)"

Synaptic shows of course an error that the package is broken. My question is how to fix it. I posted a separate question on ee here to separate the issue as I think it does not only involve the main question concerning the drivers:

If apt-get update doesn't work, you have another package manager open. Only have one open at the same time. In synaptic you have an option "Fix Broken packages".

Ok, I can report some progress. Managed to get rid of the empty package, I deleted all directories that were written in the file "brscan2.postrm".

Now SimpleScan finds the scanner, but says: "Cannot open device". So now I will have to configure something differently...

check for the driver is successful:

it@IT-NB1 ~ $ dpkg -l |grep Brother
ii  brscan2                                   0.2.5-1                                 Brother Scanner Driver
rc  dcp135clpr:i386                           1.0.1-1                                 Brother lpr Inkjet Printer Definitions

Here are the basic instructions from Brother that I found:

http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/instruction_scn1a.html#dpkg1

Sounds simple, but still there is a problem somewhere...
