I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

A untagged ethernet interface is a interface for untagged traffic i.e. a printer or workstation

A tagged port can accept tags form the connected hardware i.e. a uplink (trunk) to another switch with more vlans.

A tagged port can be a memer of more vlan's
A untagged port can be only a member of 1 vlan.

I hope this clears thing up....

In  short, a tagged port is a trunk port. It actually tags all the passing traffic so that traffic pertaining to a particular vlan is never lost. As you know, trunk port carries traffic from different vlans, so they need tagging to be identified at the remote end so that they are segregated properly.

A switch port, which belong to a single vlan is untagged port, because it will pass traffic for one and only one vlan only. Hence no tagging required. So untagged.

Generally, a tagged port is a trunk port, that is, multiple VLANS exist on that port. Each VLAN gets an ID (tag) when there are multiple VLANs on a port to separate traffic from these VLANS. The ports that belong to only one VLAN, there is no need for tagging, hence they are called untagged ports.
