If this is a truly a fibre cable, it is simply dirty in most cases.

Also, verify you are using the correct OM category cable for your speed/range combination. But if the if - speed is only 1GbE, you can ignore this.

Use a fibre microscope to detect any dirt and clean it with a certified fibre cleaning kit. Do not forget to clean the other site as well.

If the error rate keeps being high or much above normal, swap the GBIC's first and then the cable.

Hi,

Fault tolerance on those switches is 1 error in 5000 packages so if the switch has been on for a while i would not be surprised to see these amount of dropped packages. (after all, the TCP stack will send another package if dropped somehow)

If you find your network not performing as expected there could be a problem. Dropping more than 1 package every 5000 HP says you need to look into: High traffic or network design problems.

Good place to start is here.

Patricksr1972 is right of course, this might be normal because I do not know when you last reseted the counter and how many packets where transfered since then.

I just wanted to add that fibre is used for uplink (inter switch connections) ports in most cases and with correct cabling I see very few RX errors (much less than 1 in 5000) on these ports on my HP switches (very high traffic). This reflects just my personal experience.
