How do I enable this and do I need a valid support contract?

If you are Licensed for vCenter Server, you can install Update Manager, on any Windows supported Server.

Do you have a License for VMware vSphere vCenter Server?

You do not need a valid support contract, but you do need to be Licensed for VMware vSphere vCenter Server.

VMware Update Manager (VUM), integrates with  VMware vSphere vCenter Server. The installation program is on the VMware vSphere vCenter Server DVD.

Thanks, that did the trick.   I do see a scheduled task, although should I see an icon in Vsphere as well?
