Windows XP application Installaion Error

I am trying to install applications on a newly installed Windows XP service Pack 1. However whenever i try to install applications & software i get a message saying "spinstall.exe is not valid WIN32 application, what does this mean & how do I fix this problem?

Who is Participating?
I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Does that happen with a specific software you are trying to install? If yes, please post software name and version. Thank you.
