Find Autonumber

I have a procedure where I insert values into a table that uses the autonumber feature.  However, I need to capture the new number and insert it, with additional values, into a second table.  How can I programmatically capture that new autonumber to enter into the second table?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

DoCmd.RunSQL "INSERT SecondTable SELECT (SELECT MAX(AUTONUMBER FROM FIRSTTABLE)), Field1, Field2 FROM TableA"

or if you are more tied to existing code you could use soemthing like
LastAutonumber = DMax(......
and feed the LastAutonumber variable into an insert
