I am a longtime computer developer. I have been doing this for over 40 years.

I am very internet savvy. I develop web apps for a living.

But I am at a complete loss about Facebook. Of course I have a Facebook account.

People send me messages. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do something as simple as answer a message.

I cannot see how it can be so difficult. I know that hundreds of millions of people use it all the time.

Can someone refer me to a short reference on how to do just the basics with Facebook?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Lets get REAL specific.

How do I respond to a message.

Why is this so complicated?
Rob MinersCommented:
Your not alone there old mate, I've always found Facebook complicated. Just when you think you have the hang of something they change it.

OK top left of the Facebook page you will see three Icons next to a white facebook, left click on the second Icon. This will bring up your Inbox. Assuming that you're on your Home page.

You may also have a link to Messages in the list underneath.

Left click on one of your contacts who sent you a message a dialogue box will pop up and you can then respond and click Reply.

If you want to send a message to someone click the link to the right in the Inbox, Send a new message.

A dialogue box will pop up

Fill in To: when you start typing it will bring up a contact relevant to the information entered, you can just click on that contact.

Type your message and then press Enter.

Another way to message someone is to navigate to their home page by going to your Timeline page, (click on your Name) select your contact from your Friends link, by left clicking on their Icon.

When their Timeline page comes up select Message.

Amazing; did they never think of "Reply"?

I use Gmail; as a Google product, in contrast to their other stuff, it's ALMOST intuitively obvious.

My facebook looks like the attached. Sorry to be such a dummy but I don't see any icons??

Ok I haven't seen that particular view before.

Under your Name and photo on the upper left, you have a list named FAVORITES.

Messages 4 is where you need to click. This should open your inbox.

To the right of the search box at the top you have the icons. You have 1 Friend request, the next icon is for your Inbox and the last is for Notifications. Next you have your Home button and then Find Friends.

To get to your Timeline you would click on your Photo.

This should give you an idea as to what to do
