Restart HP swith in order to be connected in console mode

Hi there,
Is it normal that I must launch hyperterminal session in mode console on switch then restart the switch in order to be correctly connect ?
If I don't restart, I havent got the prompt

No, it isn't normal. Did you check switch's firmware version?

This is definitely not normal.

HP switches detect the speed of the console port automatically. To achieve this, you normally have to press <ENTER> twice when logging on. Then the connection speed it printed.

Though I am personally a big fan of RS232 connections and terminals, I try to avoid them because of their speed and the access to a serial terminal.

Just use telnet or better ssh to connect to the switch. Telnet is turned on by default. In more recent firmware versions you need to initiate the connection from the management vlan by default. Normally, this will be VLAN 1 (default VLAN). But since you seem to be able to connect via HTTP, you should be fine.

In linux, you have these tools installed. In windows you can either use Putty (telnet or SSH, and serial to avoid the awful Hyperterminal).
Also, you can install telnet from Windows Feature installer, Control Panel/Programs and Features
