Just wondering if there is free flow chart software that is generally accepted as particularly good.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

There are many; "Diagram Designer" will do fine:

You can also go for a service, much more 21st century like:
Google Draw, accessible from "create" at google drive,

Very nicely integrated in Google Drive and more professional (I do a lot of network diagrams), but they charge a (little) fee.

Because of the Google Drive integration, they are quite generally accepted.

This is kind of cool too http://www.gliffy.com/products/online/

I use http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omnigraffle/  I paid $100 for it, but that was about  5 years ago ($1.65 per month and falling).  Outside of google draw, most of the online tools you find are going to be freemium.  I think in the end it pays to get what works best for you.   You have to also figure in your time to the equation.

Good luck with your search.

OmniGraffle Pro is really good. I used it quite a lot when I still had a Mac... a shame they do not port it to more platforms!
i always use Microsoft Viso easy to use and highly professional
