Is SQL Mail and Database mail are the same R2? Are these two the options available in built in SQL R2 for email solutions?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

As far as I knew, SQL Mail was replaced by Database Mail as of SQL 2005.  When I browse out to my 2008R2 instance, I do notice Database Mail there; however, SQL Mail is listed under the Legacy subfolder.  I would recommend using Database Mail - I believe SQL Mail is only still around for backwards compatibility.

As far as the differences between the two, check out here: http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2008/07/05/sql-server-difference-between-database-mail-and-sqlmail/
