"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I have chosen public profiles when setting up the default for the server that I want other users to use. If a profile is specific to a job or user, then I use private profile. Therefore, it is based on your needs. If you want user mail to fail if the user does not explicitly belong to a profile, then private profiles are the way to go. If you need a profile to serve all DB mail usage on the server, you need to have it public.

That is my understanding at least.
