Are you planning on adding a SPF record to an excisting domain?
If so you need the DNS zone for that domain, suppose this is also hosted at 1and1.
Big question then is, does 1and1 support SPF (txt) records?

HI ,
1and1 do not support SPF on shared hosting.
I was looking to keep hosting at 1and1 pull the domains name server external add the record their and point back to the domains and IP in the office for the mx record.
Hi awall2012,

If you have a domain with 1and1 already then it will automatically have been set up on 1and1's nameservers and their default DNS configuration.  You can simply login to your 1and1 account and add the required MX and SPF records.  Refer to the help documentation here.

Hi Bluecomputer ,

Ive talk to 1and1 about this anumber of times, they don't support SPF. txt records.

hence the queston.

what Iam looking for is a nameserver service I can pop the domain on to and take control.

Does 1and1 allows you to transfer the DNS to another hosting party?
If yes, move it and arrange the DNS there, if not? i am afraid you are stuck unless you change provider.

Hi Bluecomputer

1and1 will let me set an external nameserver for my domain  -so yes
I really can't recommend that.  A domain services company that doesn't support TXT records (which is all an SPF record is) is about as much use as tits on a fish.  Transfer your domain to a real registrar that has actual control panel and nameservers.  It's basic frigging DNS, if they don't give you a way to add TXT records they're just useless.
