but then i do a search in google
using for example "abc.com" which should then bring up all pages but when i run this it does not return any of them, even though it i type in tern "for sale" it will find at least one page.
any ideas on why this happens

To start with, there are a lot of great SEO posts and articles here on EE.  Outside of that, I use http://moz.com/ http://www.seobook.com/ http://www.youtube.com/user/GoogleWebmasterHelp and keep up with my google webmaster tools.  Stay away from any posts that guarantee anything.  It is a lot of hard work, great content that is fresh and updated on a regular basis that is well written, free from basic errors, not spammy (in google's eyes, not yours).

To help you best with some good objective opinions, you can post your link.  Otherwise, it is too hard to guess your answer.   You can also post a link to your site in the bug finder and get objective opinions about the entire site that will help you.

it is a little bit of a general question and not really site related, thought i may be wrong.
but if if type in ' used cars ' into google and it finds my site abc.com/cars
would not it make sense that if i typed in "abc.com" should it not return the page

that is my major question
any ideas

If you want to see what pages it has indexed for your site the use site:abc.com as the search term.

If you type in a domain, you typically see just one page and sometimes the outline of your site (contact, about, etc).  When you type in your domain name you might see, "More results from mysite.com »" and that prevents multiple results.  If you search   site:mysite.com you should see a listing of your site.

You should also be using google webmaster tools to figure out if there are any crawl errors on your site.
