Monitoring web traffic

I have a customer who wants to monitor his staff’s web traffic usage and what sites they are visiting.  He has an SBS 2008 standard server onsite; does the server have this functionality built in and if so, what component would I look at configuring?  If not, do you know of any free applications that I could use on the server that would give me the information.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hi,

SBS 2008 standard servers does does not come with any utility that you can use to monitor web traffic. The ablity to use two NIC solution has been taken away from SBS 2008 so it cannot act as an internet router (previous versiob dows, 2000, 2003)

How are the clients accessing the internet, are they going directly to the router or they are using some kind of proxy.

If they are going through your router/ADSL directly, yu might look through the log to see the out going traffics, but this depend if your router have one.

Alternately you can set up a proxy servers such as Wingate, Winproxy etc.

Hi giveandtake638, the clients go direct at the moment, no proxy servers.

Then the option that you have is to install a Proxy server so that user can go through this.
