deploy an ASP.NET web application with a updated reference dll

I need to deploy a testing web site, where everything is the same as a production web site except that a DLL library is going to be an updated version.

I tried copy the folder for the production web site under Inetpub\wwwroot folder, and then replace the DLL under it with the new version, but am getting an run-time error message.

Can someone please advise how to do this properly? Thanks.

Maybe your old code is not compatible with the new dll. What is the run-time error?

I also have similar situation for testing my new code.

I suggest to publish your asp.NET application locally and then copy it to the production server ,under a separate virtual directory to test it . If all is good then copy the dll to the production application(always make a copy of the old dll)

Error message:
Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

Not sure what "application error" could it be?
