vs 2010 crashing

I changed one of the files by mistake and then DIDN't SAVE IT . I just closed the entire VS ide. Somehow, now when i double click on the file to open in the visual studio editor , it crashed the IDE by saying "Microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to close".

How can i fix this?

Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

have you rebooted the machine and tried again?

try and open the IDE by clicking a different project file from the explorer. to see if it's just the project.  if it open, you can try making a new project and bringing in your files one at a time till you find the problem.

if that doesn't work. do a repair install on VS
what kind of file is it?

if it is a text file (.cpp, .c, .h, .rc) you might do the following:

- copy the contents into the clipboard
- remove (not delete the file) from project (tree).
- rename the file (for example by using the explorer.
- close the visual studio (save project).
- open the solution again in visual studio
- right-click on the project folder (in solution tree) where the file was removed from
- create a new file of same name as the old one and paste the contents from clipboard.
- close all documents
- do a full rebuild

if the problem was called by a wrong dependency or by a wrong entry in 'intellisense', the above procedure should help from that.

good luck.
