Reading html dropdown list.

Hi Experts,

I am trying to pass the selected value of a dropdown list on a web page to a Javascript function. It does not work what am I doing wrong?

function setItemsPerDay() {
            itemsPerDay = document.getElementsByName("itemsPerDay")[0];
            generateChartData();
            chart.validateData();
        }

<select name="itemsPerDay" onchange="setItemsPerDay();">
                    <option value="1" selected>1</option>
                    <option value="2">2</option>
                    <option value="3">3</option>
                    <option value="4">4</option>
                </select>

Like this:

function setItemsPerDay() {
            itemsPerDay = document.getElementById("itemsPerDay").selectedIndex;
            generateChartData();
            chart.validateData();
        }

<select name="itemsPerDay" id="itemsPerDay" onchange="setItemsPerDay();">
                    <option value="1" selected>1</option>
                    <option value="2">2</option>
                    <option value="3">3</option>
                    <option value="4">4</option>
                </select>

Hi Dave,

Your solution does not work but this does:

 itemsPerDay = document.getElementsByName("itemsPerDay")[0].value;

Is this the correct way to do it?
